Intro to Mahjong

Beginner Mahjong

Have you ever wanted to learn how to play mahjong but didn't know who to ask? Or perhaps you've seen it played and were curious about all the cool looking tiles, but the groups seemed pretty cutthroat and intimidating? Maybe you're just looking for a new game to add to your vast game knowledge. Or you've played one of the hundreds of matching mahjong games and thought "there's gotta be more to this game than just matching tiles!" For all those reasons, we decided to create a newbie friendly series of workshops. You'll sit down with a group of about 4, with at least one person at your table who knows how to play. They will patiently walk you through the game, taking as much time as you need. By the end of the night you'll have at least a couple games under your belt, and be looking forward to the next month's workshop!

We ask that all attendees be vaccinated. There is plenty of room for social distancing, and the space is large and well ventilated. Masks are welcomed but not required. Feel free to bring snacks or drinks for yourself.

Capacity is limited by how many people attend who know how to play and can teach us new folx. $10 suggested donation per person to help defray costs, but no one turned away for lack of funds. Most of the funds go directly to supporting the Eastside Jewish Commons.
