Ukrainian Folk Song Workshop with Darka Dusty

Register here

The Portland Folkmusic Society and EJC Present a Ukrainian folk song workshop led by Darka Dusty!

All ages $10 adv/$12 door.

Darka Dusty is a first-generation Ukrainian-American singer-musician born in Detroit and based in Portland. As half of Darka & Slavko, she traveled from the U.S. to Ukrainein 1989 to play at Chervona Ruta, the first independent Ukrainian pop music festival. The duo won “Best International Band” honors and returned to play in that country several times. These days Darka is often seen leading Darka Dusty and the Borshch Beatniks, which performs original songs that include jazz and country influences along with Ukrainian.

For this workshop, she will return to her roots in traditional Ukrainian music, and teach a few of those songs to participants -- including harmonies. “We’re called the singing nation. When you get Ukrainians together you’re going to have three-part harmony,” Darka explained.

The date of this workshop is significant, as it is close to the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine of Feb. 24, 2022. “Ukraine is going through its most upsetting time since WWII,” Dusty said.

Since 1976, Portland FolkMusic Society has been active preserving, presenting and promoting folk music and arts in the greater Portland Oregon area. PFS sponsors song circles, concerts, workshops and retreats – in person and virtual – and helps its members and the whole community pass the word around about folk music events, from old time ballads to sea shanties, from 60’s protest folk to contemporary singer-songwriters.

PFS is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

Screening: "Muhammad Ali - The Greatest"

Screening: "Muhammad Ali - The Greatest"

William Klein’s masterful portrait of the Man-So-Mean-He-Made-Medicine-Sick focuses on the lead-ups to and aftermaths of three of his signature fights (both title matches with Sonny Liston in 1964 and 1965, and the Rumble in the Jungle with George Foreman in 1974) and, in the process, miraculously manages to touch on nearly everything the three-time undisputed heavyweight champion of the world represented. Muhammad Ali, the Greatest is arguably the most complex documentary about an athlete ever made, as attuned to the fascinating sociopolitical climate surrounding the champ as it is to his incomparable achievements within the ring. An exhilarating medley of Ali’s unforgettable press-conference performances and incredible footage showcasing his physical and rhetorical prowess alike, the film argues for his status as one of the key cultural figures of his time.

Free (donations to EJC accepted)

All Ages; $5

EJC is wheelchair accessible.

Kenahorror! Behind the Evil Eye - Jewish Lore that Begat the Horror Genre

Strangely garbed hominids gather for their weekly ritual: chanting as the sun sets, they begin their night of revelry. Dressed in finery, wearing distinctive head coverings, they ignite flames and howl in peculiar tongues, drink from gilded vessels the juice of plump fruit in the prime of life, and tear a braided body to shreds. The rite culminates in an indulgent hedonistic feast punctuated with raucous song and discourse on their ancient myths.

Throughout history the stories, myths, and fears by and about Jewish customs and Jewish people have been used to create literature, film and art, often without the consent of, or input from, the people depicted. It is a little known fact that most scary books and films that predate nuclear war feature these stories that cast Jewish folklore and traditions as something to be feared. In this series we will illuminate how Jewish stereotypes became the foothold for the genre of horror as we know it today.

For the inaugural event we present the Yiddish folktale "The Finger" and screen Tim Burton's Corpse Bride which is based upon this Jewish story, yet never acknowledged. Discussion following the film.

Sliding Scale $7-$18

TischPDX Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out Hybrid Course, Feb-June 2025

TischPDX is joining with the Kirva Institute to offer “Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out,” a six month cohort study open to the  Portland Jewish community.

Form antiracist habits and behaviors through Jewish spiritual practice in our course, Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out. This cohort is open to all. Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out is a course and community of practice that equips participants with daily concrete Jewish spiritual tools of Mussar to confront, subvert, and heal implicit and internalized racism within ourselves and others, supporting the collective organizing, advocacy and service-work efforts to dismantle racism systemically.

Our first of 14 sessions begins on February 4, 2025 and end on June 26th, 2025. See full course schedule here

Register here

Efforts to dismantle racism are often comprised of education, advocacy, and systemic change. These efforts are not enough —it’s crucial that we also do the inner work necessary to change our habits of mind, body, and spirit to wholly dismantle racism. Indeed, it's through strengthening our habits of mind, body and spirit that we’ll be most effective and successful in our advocacy and organizing to dismantle racism systemically. We have ancestral wisdom available to support this change; Mussar is the Jewish spiritual discipline designed to integrate what the head understands with what the heart feels through daily practice. Emerge from this program with renewed ability and resilience to disrupt racism, a regular spiritual practice, and a set of concrete tools to support your antiracism efforts.

Impact: 80% of respondents share they're better able to resist burnout and sustain themselves in the fight for racial justice, and over 85% share they feel more equipped to confront and undo racism within themselves, others and communal spaces.

The Course: This is a 14-sesssion hybrid Zoom/in person training from January-June 2025 and includes: two 135-min orientation sessions; five 135-minute monthly learning and practice sessions; and six 90-min monthly anti-racist group-exercise sessions. The full course schedule can be found below.

Level: Intermediate -- This course builds on an existing understanding of systemic racism and focuses on the application of antiracism through communities of practice.

We know that this work of building our antiracist muscle and integrating Jewish spiritual practice is best done in partnership with others from your community. We encourage you to come to this learning with a co-conspirator or ally that’s also committed to racial justice in your communal spaces.

- -

This course and community of practice was developed by Yehudah Webster and Rabbi David Jaffe of Kirva, a network of activists, educators, and spiritual leaders in the Jewish community that supports activists in exploring Jewish spiritual wisdom and developing Jewish spiritual practice. Learn more about this course and their work at Kirva.org.

This cohort is being offered in partnership between TischPDX and Kirva and will be co-facilitated with a faculty member of Kirva (R' David Jaffe or Yehudah Webster) along with TischPDX leaders Rabbi Ariel Stone, Eleyna Fugman and Sabina Spicer.

Indie Pop Up Screening: "Free for All: The Public Library"

EJC is proud to launch the second season of Indie Pop Up, the acclaimed documentary film series. This season we will present five movies starting with Free for All: The Public Library.

Free for All: The Public Library tells the story of the quiet revolutionaries who made a simple idea happen. From the pioneering women behind the “Free Library Movement” to today's librarians who service the public despite working in a contentious age of closures and book bans, meet those who created a civic institution where everything is free and the doors are open to all.

Director Dawn Logsdon travels the United States, discovering historic and modern-day figures, especially women, who contributed to the library’s integral position within democracy. Free for All: The Public Library chronicles the evolution of the nation’s public libraries, tracing the battles over who can enter, what belongs there, and who makes these decisions, while exploring how public commons are defined and defended.

The film is open-captioned.

Join us for a talkback immediately following the screening with the Library Foundation’s Executive Director, Love Centerwall and Annie Lewis, Director of Multnomah County Libraries. The talkback will be ASL interpreted.

Sunday Afternoon Klez and Jewish Music Jam at EJC

EJC Klezmer Jam

The people have spoken and what they've asked for is a Klezmer jam at Eastside Jewish Commons! Let's have one on a Sunday afternoon. Bring your instruments, sheet music, heart and soul, and don't worry about ability--this is a (facilitated) jam for all. We'll settle in and play for a couple of hours. Once you sign up, materials from the other jams will be sent to you and perhaps even new material! If you have a song to share, please bring it! Also if you play an instrument that is non-concert, i.e. Bb, you'll have to be ready to transpose or make your own versions (don't worry if you don't know what this means; it's mainly for clarinet and trumpet players who read sheet music).

Feel free to eat here (maybe it will start to become a Klezmer brunch), just no pork or shellfish. N.B. this is not a show, so while you might have a family member or two with you this is really not a place to listen to music but rather it’s a place to participate.

A FUNNY MOVIE ABOUT GETTING SERIOUS

Director Joan Micklin Silver's underrated gem from 1988 stars Amy Irving as thirty-something New Yorker Isabelle "Izzy" Grossman. Izzy spends her time going from her tiny, solitary West Side apartment to that of her grandmother (Reizl Bozyk) on the Lower East Side. In between, Izzy builds a glowing reputation at the swank bookstore where she works. While her grandmother plots to find her a romantic match, Izzy is courted by a married, worldly author, Anton (Jeroen Krabbé), yet can't seem to shake the down-to-earth appeal of Sam (Peter Riegert), a pickle vendor.
