West Side Story, with a book by Arthur Laurents, is a classic 1957 musical that reimagines Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in 1950s New York City, focusing on the rivalry between the Jets and Sharks gangs and the forbidden love between Tony and Maria. It features music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, with direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins, and is known for its powerful themes, iconic score, and athletic dance, becoming a landmark in musical theater.
